6 Things I’ve Learned Since Becoming a Texan

September 2, 2015

Wow! Is it already Wednesday!? This week has totally just taken me by storm.  A couple weeks ago I started work as a speech pathologist in the Richardson school district. While that alone is keeping me crazy busy, our photography business is thriving as we welcome new couples to our family, and on top of that….we are in the process of something exciting!! But I’m keeping that on the DL and will share that with you all hopefully soon!

While life is crazy on this end, I hope all of you are starting out the new month well.  I don’t know about you but I can hardly wait for pumpkin spice lattes, cooler fall weather and wearing boots….every day. I kind of am obsessed with leather boots and unfortunately have found myself getting a new pair the past few winters.  I seriously just adore all kinds of boots.

Anyway, like most of you all know, Jordan and I moved to Dallas, TX from Las Cruces, NM almost 2 months ago.  We moved in the heat of the summer, and in these past several weeks, I’ve learned a few quirky, essential things about good ol’ Dallas….. 😉

5 Things I’ve Learned Since Becoming a Texan

1.     Travel time makes the best phone call time.

Growing up in little Artesia, NM and moving to college in Las Cruces, travel time was just never an issue.  In Dallas, it takes about 20-30 minutes to get most places I’ve learned.  However, I’ve also learned to love this time for phone calls and good music jamming.  I truly thought I would loathe the driving time here. Don’t get me wrong. I have my days!

2.     Chiggers are a thing.

Oh gosh. I only thought I was prepping for mosquitos during my first couple photo sessions out in the Texas grasslands here.  And then I met chiggers. And they LOVED me. It was an unfortunate first couple weeks of treating these these itchy bites. It was a welcoming first two weeks.

Side note: the tall grassy areas make the best photo locations though!!! I’ll never stop.

3.     Humidity is real but can be beaten.

Umm…..let’s be straightforward about this. I miss nights that actually cool off!  After my photo sessions, I was a hot mess. And still have yet to finish a session not looking this way.  I am allll sorts of sweaty. Which is embarrassing. And I just have to make fun of it. My clients? Oh, they’re just a gorgeous kind of glistening, of course. Not to worry.

Ready for some TMI?! I learned a little trick that if I wear a tank top or spaghetti strap under my shirt at sessions, it absorbs the sweat and it doesn’t seep through!  That’s Texas humidity for ya.

4.     Tex-mex isn’t Mexican food.

Ah it’s so true!  Give me Andeles! We’ll accept shipments of their green chile sauce. We will!!!

But anyplace that serves beans is a 5-star in my book. 😉

5.     There’s community everywhere if you’re open to it.

This is one thing that I’ve been so encouraged by.  We’ve been welcomed by family. By Jordan’s coworkers.  By my coworkers. By people I’ve met through wedding and engagement photography. By meeting other wedding vendors in the area.  And by the most random other ways of meeting people.

It’s a small world. Even when you move to Dallas, TX. And we love that.

6. Cats are cutely comforting.

Soooooo we got a cat within these past few weeks, and I seriously look forward to coming home after work and cuddling her.  She lowers my stress levels in all ways. So there.

So far this adventure has been an adventurous one that’s flying before our eyes. And we’re buckling up tight!

Can any of you relate to what I’ve learned?

Have a great rest of the week, y’all!
